Bye-Bye Body Shaming

On April 30th, 2016, #ShakeIt for Self-Acceptance! will return to the Third Street Promenade to both empower body, soul, and self-acceptance and kick off National Mental Health Awareness Month, which begins on May 1st.

According to the former Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Thomas Insel, “Our best estimate of the number of adults with any diagnosable mental disorder within the past year is nearly 1 in 5, or roughly 43 million Americans.”

Some research points to body dissatisfaction as a public health issue. It has been associated with disordered eating patterns, higher BMI, low self-esteem, depressive symptoms, clinical eating disorders, and more. For so many mental health issues, early intervention is key. Information and inspirational conversations — without shame and with hope — can make a world of difference.

#ShakeIt offers tips, hope and information about self-acceptance, body image, eating issues and various mental health topics.

Information booths open at 11am. Visit representatives from (in alphabetical order) Center for Discovery, Center for Individual and Family Counseling, La Ventana Treatment Centers, Monte Nido and Affiliates, Reasons Eating Disorder Center, Rosewood Centers for Eating Disorders, Rosewood Santa Monica: A New Journey, & Win the Diet War with Dr. Nina.

Don’t miss the presentation at noon with inspiring speeches — and tips on self-acceptance! We’ll also tap our toes to a tune that says it all: “I’m Original,” the anthem written specifically for #ShakIt for Self-Acceptance! by Auburn Road.

Event concludes at 1:30pm.

This is a unique kind of rally for sure! Organizers believe that change can come from people uniting through inspiration and empowerment. #ShakeIt for Self-Acceptance! today and every day!
